Department of Travel Medicine and Travel Clinic

Travel is an important part of our lives; in 2017 there were 72.8 million visits overseas by UK residents, a 3% increase from the previous year.

At the Hospital for Tropical Diseases (HTD) we believe that whether your trip is for work, holiday or to visit friends or relatives you should be able to travel with up to date, clear and comprehensive pre-travel advice.


What is different about our service?

We specialise in offering individually tailored, doctor and nurse-led consultations, to people of all ages with on-going health needs or conditions.

Examples of the types of travellers we regularly see include those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, infants, older persons or those who have conditions such as HIV, cancer, sickle cell disease, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune conditions, chronic kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease, allergies and post-transplant patients.

  • Anti-malarial medication
  • Vaccines
  • Altitude medication
  • Private prescriptions
  • Travel related products (eg mosquito repellents and bed nets)

All patients (regardless of their route of referral) will have to pay for all vaccines, anti-malarial medications, and private prescriptions as well as travel related equipment (eg mosquito repellents, bed nets etc).


What types of consultation do we offer?

  • Consultant lead travel advice (NHS or Private)
  • Nurse lead travel advice (NHS or Private)
  • Vaccine appointments
  • Pre- and Post-deployment health screens for humanitarian aid workers, NGO workers, Governmental bodies, academic institutions and other corporate organisations.
  • Post tropical screens

Please note if you have a referral letter from an NHS health care provider you will not be charged for your appointment.

If you do not have an NHS referral we can offer you a private appointment for which you will be charged.

We do not currently offer walk in appointments.


Opening hours

Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm

There are no consultant lead clinics on Wednesdays’ and Fridays’
